A personal record of what's going on in my Northern Michigan zone 4 gardens. I use raised beds and grow organically. Nothing fancy--just trying to garden with nature in mind.

Garden Plans 2012 and the Final Seed Orders Arrive

The final 2 seed orders have arrived. Pinetree seeds are nice because they pack less seeds and keep the price reasonable. After all, do I really need 50 tomato seeds?

Swallowtail seeds had their free shipping again. I bought all flower seeds from them. I'm trying a lot of different Coneflowers and Delphiniums this year.

And now for the garden plans:

No fancy computer images for you! Excuse the lousy drawings. I'm no artist!

On both these plans, the right side of the paper is North. All beds in the vegetable garden have been rotated north from last year. AND, lesson learned----I'm putting my Hearts of Gold melon in a raised bed and hopefully I can keep it warm enough to have a few ripen this year. Last fall I tossed THIRTEEN melons that never ripened because of our short , cold summer.

I'll be tucking in extra herbs in my flower borders this year. I really enjoyed drying my own basil, oregano and thyme last year. I froze a lot of chopped chives and also parsley. And last year was also my first year growing/drying mint for tea and I really enjoyed that served with honey from the hives we had placed out in our back field. This will be year 4 for the vegetable garden and it is really becoming the source for most of our food now.

I'm really enjoying those blogs that have been showing their seed orders and even some that are starting seeds. Such joy for someone (Me!) that can't start seeds for another TWO months.

Thanks for putting some garden "love" out there. I'd go crazy without it.

Have a great weekend, everyone!!
